Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico (PUPR) is a private, non profit, co-educational higher education institution founded in September, 1966. The main campus is located in San Juan, Puerto Rico, at the Hato Rey ward, quite close to the Golden Mile area. The main academic disciplines are: Engineering (seven programs), Geomatic Sciences, Architecture, Computer Sciences and Business Administration (four majors). At the present time, it is the largest private Engineering School in Puerto Rico and the only one in the district of San Juan. It is also the largest private Hispanic Serving Engineering School in the United States and its territories. In 2001 and 2003, the University opened new campuses in the cities of Miami and Orlando, Florida, respectively.
PUPR offers Bachelor of Science degrees in: Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Land Surveying and Mapping and Computer Science; Bachelor of Business Administration degrees in: Accounting, Construction Management, General Management and Marketing. PUPR is fully authorized by the Puerto Rico Education Council, the state licensing agency, and accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) of the U.S.A. The following seven engineering programs – Civil, Environmental, Industrial, Electrical, Computer, Mechanical, and Chemical – are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, www.abet.org.
In addition, the Land Surveying and Mapping program is accredited the Applied and Natural Science Commission of ABET, www.abet.org. In December 2019, the ABET’s visiting team evaluated all eight programs for re-accreditation. Moreover, two additional programs – Biomedical Engineering and Computer Science – were evaluated for their first accreditation. All ten programs were accredited.
PUPR was recently designated by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education (CAE/IAE) for the years 2009-14. This center is one of 100 in the nation – USA 50 states and its territories. It indeed, speaks very well of our Computer Science and Computer Engineering programs at the undergraduate and the graduate levels.
The Bachelor’s degree program in Architecture is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB).
During the fall term of the academic year 2011- 12 the total enrollment at the main campus in Hato Rey was 5,050 students, of which 69.4% of them were enrolled in the School of Engineering and Geomatic Sciences, 12.3% in the School of Architecture and 3.6% in the School of Management. The total enrollment is represented by 4,315 (85.5%) undergraduate students and 732 (14.5%) students enrolled in the several Master degree programs.
The faculty is made up of 126 members in the School of Engineering and Geomatic Sciences, 43 in the School of Architecture, 17 in the School of Management, 62 members of Arts and Sciences and 17 members in the Graduate Program. In its history, PUPR has awarded 8,591 bachelor degrees and 1,993 master degrees.
