Master in Environmental Management: Program Overview

Environmental Protection is a well established multi-disciplinary academic discipline concerned with (a) the protection of human populations from the effects of adverse environmental factors; (b) the protection of environments, both local and global, from the potentially deleterious effects of human activities; and the improvement of environmental quality for people's health and well being. The common theme of environmental protection is a basic understanding of environments, how they function, how they can be damaged and protected, what hazards they may present to society and how to manage them in a sustainable way. Most environmental professionals deal with atmosphere, aquatic and terrestrial environments as well as their interaction among them and society.

Environmental Protection Management is concerned with the development of new and better ways to design and operate facilities and systems which will provide for protection and improvement of environmental quality and the conservation of natural resources. This is a new and developing field, and the emphasis is on environmental protection and sustainable development. Professionals in this field help industries and government agencies to find ways of accomplishing what has to be done without causing pollution and without damaging the environment and protecting public health and safety.

Environmental protection managers work in industrial and services corporations, in consulting firms, in local, state and federal government, in Universities and with other professionals corporation such as lawyers, financial institution and public-interest groups. Almost all industries and government agencies have Departments or Sections of environmental protection. Environmental protection managers must be able to understand complex environmental laws and compliance regulations. They must be masters of statistical analysis, risk assessment, permitting and predictive modeling. Also, they must be up to date in water pollution treatment and pollution prevention, air pollution control, solid and hazardous waste management, industrial safety and environmental impact assessment. The management of environmental emergencies and surveying and monitoring techniques is a must. The content of the MEPM covers all the disciplines discussed in a carefully integrated approach with the vision of a world in which it will be possible for everyone to meet their basic needs and to achieve an equitable share of their aspirations while maintaining an environment that is healthy, physically attractive, and biologically productive.
