GASTRONOMY AND RENEWABLE ENERGY BIG WINNERS AT
2012 POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY BUSINESS FAIR
San Juan, Puerto Rico – For the fifth year in a row, the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico (PUPR) School of Management contributes to the inventiveness and business development of the Country with the celebration of the 2012 Business Fair. Eighteen students gathered at the Floral Park Room of said institution in Hato Rey to compete in the categories of Best Business Idea and Best Established Business.
“The purpose of this activity is to allow the undergraduate and graduate students of the institution to exhibit their ideas with commercial potential”, explained Eng. José O. Rivera Rivera, dean of the PUPR School of Management.
A jury composed of Lourdes Alcrudo, director of Institutional Development at PUPR; Angelique Adjutant, public affairs officer at the US Small Business Administration; and Jorge Morales, Business Incubators coordinator; was responsible to evaluate the submitted proposals.

In the category of Best Business Idea, third place winners were Jo-Luis López and Elvin Cardona, students of the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science (ECECS). They received a cash prize of $50 sponsored by Whirlpool of Puerto Rico, for their proposal “Communication Solutions”. Second place, with a cash prize of $50 sponsored by Whirlpool of Puerto Rico, went to José M. Cumba, Xabriel Santiago and William Pereira, students of the Department of Geomatic Sciences, for their proposal “Location of Damaged Road”. The award for Best Business Idea, and winner of the cash prize of $100 sponsored by the Deanship of Engineering & Geomatic Sciences, went to Gabriel Vélez Pérez, student of the Department of ECECS, for his proposal “Intelligent Solar Bicycles”.
In the Best Established Business category, Elvin A. Rodríguez, student of the Business Administration Department, won third place for his business “Elvin Mobile”. Second place went to Moisés Cardona Rodríguez, student of the Department of ECECS, for his business “Computerized Hydroponics”. Finally, the prize for the Best Established Business, and winner of the cash prize of $300 sponsored by Merck Puerto Rico, went to Elimari Escalante De Jesús, student of the Department of Business Administration, for her business “Nanobox”.
“Nanobox is a food truck that focuses on gourmet food prepared at the moment”, according to SAL portal. “They have a varied menu which consists of ‘carne frita’ in hot soy sauce, ceviche with mango and lemon juice, shrimp ‘bacalaitos’, the box burger, and more. Desserts also stand out, with brownie cupcakes or the fabulous cheese crème brulée.”
“I congratulate the students, entrepreneurs and professionals, all of them, for the creativity, inventiveness and initiative they have demonstrated with their proposals and businesses”, highlighted Eng. Rivera. “They are who, in the very near future, will be in charge of leading the economy of our country. I am pleased to know we are in good hands. Congratulations, all of you.”
