San Juan, Puerto Rico, September 18, 2012 – This Wednesday, September 19th, the Liga de Voleibol Superior Masculino (LVSM) kicks-off its 2012-2013 season. This year, the tournament will be dedicated to renowned athlete, and Naranjito’s own, Juan Roberto ‘Rafúl’ Rodríguez.

Currently, Rodríguez is a prominent member of the Department of Athletics and Gym at the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico (PUPR), where he holds the position of assistant director and volleyball coach. However, for more than 40 years, Rodríguez served as coach, player and agent of some of the best volleyball teams in Puerto Rico. His career in the sport began in 1958 when he debuted as a player of the LVSM Naranjito Changos. He won five titles with them, later playing for the Puerto Rico National Team from 1960 to 1970. Subsequently, he became manager for the LVSM Santurce Mets and the Guaynabo Mets, taking them to the championship in 1976. As a coach and agent, Rodríguez is known for his ability to spot new talent. He is credited with recruiting players like Edwin Fernández, Josean Llanos, Ossie Antonetti, and Gregory Berríos for the Naranjito Changos.
