POLITÉCNICA RECIBE VALIOSA ACREDITACION DE LA
AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF STATE HIGHWAY AND TRANSPORTATION
OFFICIALS MATERIALS REFERENCE LABORATORY

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO, June 20, 2012 – The Construction Materials Laboratory at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico (PUPR) was recently awarded with a certification by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials Materials Reference Laboratory (AMRL) through the Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory (CCRL) of the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology.

This certification places the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering’s Construction Materials Laboratory as one of only six laboratories in Puerto Rico to have AMRL credentials. Out of these six laboratories, only two (including the PUPR lab) have metal testing accreditation.

“Polytechnic University is the only higher learning institution in Puerto Rico to have a certification of this nature, which shows the knowledge and quality used to do these tests at the Construction Materials Laboratory facilities,” said José Borrageros, P.E., director of the PUPR’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

The CCRL uses ASTM International (formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials) standards to certify the procedures of required tests in the construction industry. The tests for which the laboratory was certified are:

Quality Systems

R18, C1077 (Aggregate), and C1077 (Concrete)

Aggregates

C40, C117, C127, C128, C136, C566, and C702

Portland Cement Concrete

C31, C39, C138, C143, C172, C173, C231, C511, C617 (7000 psi and below), C803, C805, C1064, and C1231 (7000 psi and below)

Metals

A615-A370 (Carbon-Steel Bars, Deformed and Plain: Tensile Strength)

Even though the Construction Materials Laboratory was created as an academic laboratory to provide both instruction and practice for civil engineering students, the AMRL certification now enables the university to offer its services to the community and industry. The lab can now offer its services to small and medium scale builders who need to test construction materials quality and support undergraduate and graduate research at Polytechnic University.
