for visiting the website of the Department
of Electrical & Computer Engineering
and Computer Science at the Polytechnic
University of Puerto Rico at Hato Rey. In
our constant effort to respond to the
challenges of new technological
developments, evolving technologies and
the developing demands for engineering and
science in industry and government we have
been developing new programs of great
demand. We are known as a leader in
engineering education and our engaged in
academic research and education. We are
the first largest private Hispanic
engineering college in the nation.
has been a tremendous growth in our department
in both our academic offerings and in research.
In the last four years our department has grown
substantially from one academic program Bachelor
in Science in Electrical Engineering (BS EE) to
six programs of which five were created in the
last three years. These new programs are: Master
in Science in Electrical Engineering (MS EE,
2002); Bachelor in Science in Computer Science
(BS CS, 2002); Bachelor in Science in Computer
Engineering (BS CpE, 2003); Master in Science in
Computer Engineering (MS CpE, 2004), and the
Master in Science in Computer Science (MS CS,
2005). In the last two years (2004-2005) our
department has received funding for over two
million dollars from PRIDCO, NSF, NASA, ARO DoD,
and AFOSR DoD to develop the graduate academic
curriculum and strengthen the infrastructure for
research. We have hired five new PhD faculties/researchers in the last two
Today the field of computer science is one of the most popular academic disciplines in universities across the nation. The BS CS program is an academic program of great demand in the industry It is a flexible program that can be tailored to the student’s interests and accommodate to the rapid changes in the industry. It has courses in electronic commerce, internet programming, and entrepreneurship (which help students to develop their own businesses), among others.
The MS CS is the first program of its kind to be offered in Puerto Rico. This program is being funded by a grant from PRIDCO to improve the infrastructure with modern laboratories. The three main areas of interest offered in this program are: IT Management & Information Assurance (ITMIA), Knowledge Discovery & Data Mining (KDDM), and Computer Graphics & Game Technology (CGGT). The ITMIA specializes in training our graduates to become leaders in IT groups in the financial industry, including knowledge in security, operations, off-shoring and financial terminology.
There is a shortage of skilled computer security professionals capable of reducing vulnerabilities in computing systems. The KDDM are relevant in various industries such as finance or pharmaceutical where there are vast amount of data to be analyzed and leveraged for new business ideas. Graduates will be knowledgeable in applying algorithms and building systems to work with real-world data. The CGGT addresses the gaming industry by focusing on technology needed to be successful in that growing industry. Graduates will be knowledgeable in applying advanced AI techniques for commercial computer games, the use of commercial game technology for training and education, product development methodologies, and entrepreneurship.
With happiness and great pride we can assure that our distinguished faculty and high-achieving students, and excellent staff all contribute to making the Computer Science Program of the ECECS department at Polytechnic University a great success.
