Description New Seismic Provisions in Building Structural Design

Objective This seminar discusses in detail the seismic provisions of current Puerto Rico codes based on the model code UBC-97. Emphasis is given to the meaning and evaluation of all the parameters leading to the building base seismic shear. It includes comments on specific design of seams and columns in special moment resisting frames. Moreover, it incorporates overviews of regulations established by more recent codes that will be adopted by P.R. in the near future.

Objective The General Conditions of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) are the contractual document most widely used in the construction industry in Puerto Rico. Also, it is one of the most studied and one in which more jurisprudence has been established. The new AIA version contains changes and approaches different from the previous versions of 1987 and 1976. In this seminar, it will be discussed in detail, the New General Conditions from 1997, the most significant changes related with the previous version of 1987, the reasons for those changes and the implications for each part involved in the contract.
Description Quality Control in Asphalt Pavements
Objective Aspects related to the control and certification of the quality of asphalt pavements and its relation with road safety. The seminar has been prepared for all professionals involved in the evaluation, design, preparation, placing, inspection and maintenance of asphalt pavements. It will cover in details the inspection techniques and quality control, including the plant, aggregates, preparation of the base, mix, temperature, and placement.

Objective This seminar discusses in detail the computation of available flexural capacity in shear strength reduction factor based on two different criteria: concrete compression stress and steel tensile strain (ACI 318 Appendix B). Moreover, it includes the identification of shear wall boundary zone for which concrete confinement is required, in accordance with stress or strain parameters, as recommended.

Objective In this seminar, we will emphasize the owner’s right to make changes in the construction site and the reasons why the change clauses are offered, also the contractor’s payment of changes not yet agreed on, and the legal obligation of the contractor to complete the process ASAP. Other aspects to be discussed are non-disclosure of superior knowledge, different site conditions, prescriptive terms, and the adequate way to analyze cost and time extensions fro the legal point of view. It provides the conceptual foundation for constructing databases in any Relational Database Management System (RDRM). The skills and concepts participants will learn include: What are Databases and the Database Environment, Database Development Process, Entity Relationship Diagrams (ERD), Enhanced ERDs and Business Rules, and Relations Schema. Objective This seminar will provide general knowledge about an engineer’s professional responsibilities and obligations and the potential consequences of non-compliance. There will also be a discussion on some of the pertinent laws and regulations which affect the practice of engineering, such as the certification of construction projects and permits, Ten-year plus responsibility as a result of construction defects, the different Canons of Ethics applicable as well as the sanctions. The Supreme Court of Puerto Rico decisions during 2003-2005 that could impact the profession will also be reviewed.

Objective This course will be useful to students who would like improve their language skills focusing on grammar and writing. Topics such as: grammatical rules, syntax, spelling, word-morphology, sentence structure, clauses, capitalization, and punctuation must be discussed.
At the end of the course students will:
a) prouce complete and coherent sentences
b) incorporate and apply class kwoledge to their work tasks
c) recognize word classes and their functions
d) be able to express themselves in written form with accuracy
METHODOLOGY
Class instruction will be in English. A module of work is provided with rules and exercises to ensure through practice and understanding. Students will do the exercises at teaching location to be analyzed with teacher and classmates. Classes should be held twice a week. A minimum of 30 hours of work is requires though it will also depend on students pace learn.

Speaker will be discussing most relevant definitions, PLC components and applications. Objective This course requires a basic knowledge of PC computers and MS Windows environment. Participants will receive a working knowledge on up-to-date AutoCAD features. The course will provide hand-on experience in computer modeling of two dimensional (2D) drawings. Description The Construction Inspector and the Contract: Legal Aspects
Objective The contract between a contractor and an owner establishes the rights and obligations agreed by the parties to carry out a construction project and govern its relations during that process. The inspector has many contractual obligations with the owner. Between these, it is the administration of that contract during the period of construction, causing that the owner receives the contracted goods and services. Objective Curso preparatorio para el examen conducente a la certificación de Inspector de Calderas y Recipientes a Presión. Se cubrirán los siguientes temas: calderas y recipientes a presión ¿qué son? ¿Cuántos tipos existen?, normas que rigen el diseño de estos equipos, reglamentos aplicables en Puerto Rico, discusión de la Regla Especial #1, responsabilidad del patrono, componentes básicos de estos equipos y su selección, guías generales de inspección, reparaciones y alteraciones. Análisis de las deficiencias típicas encontradas durante la inspección.
